Who is responsible

We have not appointed a data protection officer. A site of this size and with this little data handling does not require one under the GDPR or the Swiss FADP.

What actually happens when you open a page

Visit analytics

A script from analytics.balmac.ch runs Umami, an open-source, self-hosted analytics tool operated on our own server — not a service run by Google, Meta or an ad network. It counts page views and reports the page, the referring site, your approximate country and city (from your IP address), your browser, operating system and screen size. It does not set a cookie, does not build a profile that follows you across visits, and does not track you across other sites. Your IP address is used to work out an approximate location and a daily count of unique visitors, and is not stored in a form that identifies you.

Legal basis: our legitimate interest in understanding which pages are read and whether the site works (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; Art. 31 Swiss FADP).Retention: aggregated visit statistics are kept for as long as we run the site; no visitor is individually identifiable in them.

Server logs

Separately, our host records each request the way every web server does: your IP address, the time, the page requested, the response code, and the browser and referring page your browser reports. These logs exist to keep the site running and to spot attacks. We do not use them to build profiles, and we do not connect them to anything else.

Legal basis: our legitimate interest in operating a secure site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; Art. 31 Swiss FADP). Retention: the logs are kept by our host for a short operational period and then deleted; we do not download or archive them.

Your dark-mode setting

If you switch between light and dark, your choice is stored in your own browser under the key theme, using localStorage. It never leaves your device and reaches no server, including ours. It is not a cookie. Clearing your site data removes it.

Email

If you write to us, we keep your message and address for as long as it takes to answer properly and, where a correction to the site came out of it, as a record of why. We do not add you to any list, because there is no list.

What this site does not do

• No cookies. None, of any kind — which is why there is no cookie banner. Our analytics is built to run without one, and a banner asking consent for nothing else would be theatre.
• No Google, no Meta, no ad-network analytics. Our one analytics script is self-hosted and does not share data with any advertising company.
• No cross-site tracking. Nothing here follows you to another site, and nothing here reads tracking data another site left behind.
• No advertising and no affiliate links, today. What changes when that changes is set out below and on the disclosure page.
• No accounts, no comments, no newsletter, no contact form. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to sign in to.
• No sale or sharing of personal information. Not now, and it has never happened.

Who else sees anything

Two parties. Our host, Infomaniak Network SA,Rue Eugène-Marziano 25, 1227 Les Acacias (Geneva), Switzerland, runs the servers the site is delivered from and processes the server logs described above on our behalf, under a data processing agreement.Servers in Switzerland. And the analytics data above is processed on infrastructure we also control, at analytics.balmac.ch — the same operator, a separate server.

Neither party is an advertising company, and neither sells or shares what it sees. Switzerland is recognised by the European Commission as providing an adequate level of data protection, so serving visitors from the EEA involves no additional transfer safeguards. If you are in the United States, your request reaches servers in Switzerland — that is where this site lives.

Do Not Track

Some browsers send a „Do Not Track“ signal, and California law requires us to tell you how we respond to it. Our analytics does not identify individual visitors to begin with — there is no per-person tracking for a Do Not Track signal to turn off, and we treat every visit the same way whether the signal is present or not.

The same goes for Global Privacy Control signals. There is no sale or sharing of personal information on this site for them to opt out of.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, ask us to restrict or stop processing it, and complain to a supervisory authority. In the EEA that is your national data protection authority; in Switzerland it is the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC).

In practice there is very little to ask for. Our analytics does not store anything that identifies you as an individual, so there is no per-visitor record to hand over or delete. Unless you have written to us, all we have otherwise is a line in a server log that we cannot connect to you by name. If you do make a request, write toinfo@howsthetide.com; we answer within one month, and we will never charge you for it.

California: this site does not meet the thresholds that make the CCPA and CPRA apply to a business, and we say that plainly rather than copy the boilerplate. The rights above are given to everyone who asks, wherever they live. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

Children

This site is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal data by email, write to us and we will delete it.

When this page changes

Two things are planned that will change it further: display advertising and affiliate links. Both bring third parties onto the page, and both are set out in advance on thedisclosure page. When either goes live, this page is updated in the same release, before the first visitor sees the change — not afterwards. The date at the top tells you when it was last reviewed.
